Environmental Policy

As a tourism provider and employer in the heart of the Burren we are very aware of the impact our business may have on the environment and we are actively taking steps to lessen any negative impacts.

We are members of the Burren Ecotourism Network. This organisation and its members work together with the aim of ‘’establishing the Burren as a premier internationally-recognised sustainable tourism region’’ and supports continued training, mentoring and independent accreditation.

The Burren Ecotourism Network (B.E.N.) has formed a partnership with the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark  which has UNESCO – supported Global Geopark Status. As members of B.E.N. we have attained the Geopark Sustainable Code of Practice for Tourism.

The Code of Practice highlights the importance of Sustainable Tourism, Working Together,  Caring for the Landscape,  Understanding our Heritage, the creation of Vibrant Communities with Strengthened Livelihoods and Sustainable Environmental Management and includes Ongoing Training. We provide training to our staff to raise awareness of our Sustainable Tourism policy. We monitor our Energy and Water Consumption and Waste Disposal.

We constantly aim is to reduce our consumption of Energy and Water and to help our guests to do the same.
We carefully monitor our Waste Disposal and aim to minimise the quantity of waste going to landfill.
Our kitchen purchases much of its produce from many excellent local food producers. We are always conscious of supporting other business and suppliers that are located in our Geopark and locally within County Clare and South Galway.
We support the principles of the Leave No Trace organisation and strive to encourage our guests to play their part in this environmentally respectful code.

We encourage our guests to walk or cycle and provide them with bus and rail service information, thus possibly eliminating unnecessary car journeys. Encouraging and supporting local initiatives is something we are always open to and happy to be involved in.

Our awareness of and desire to support sustainable tourism in the region means that we will continue to lobby policy makers at a local and national level.

Environmental and other Policies, Actions and Objectives

As active members of the Burren Ecotourism Network, we are working towards our end objective to become a carbon neutral hotel.

We are doing the following on our journey to realise that objective.

Energy

All our electricity is currently sourced from 100% renewable energy supplier.

We are constantly reducing our consumption of energy  through our policy of purchasing and using low energy appliances, lighting and practices.

We are planning to maximise the use of Solar Panel energy in 2026.

When we bought the hotel in 2015, we changed the boilers for heating and hot water from Oil to new and high efficient Gas boilers and we are now planning to incorporate them with an “air to water” system.

All our radiator have thermostatic control values and the hotel is zoned to minimise unnecessary heating.
We only use kiln dried firewood in our stoves.

To reduce our Energy consumption by 15% in 2026

Water

To reduce our Water consumption by 5% in 2026

Waste

We bottle our own water for Guest bedrooms and the restaurant.

We compost some of our food waste

To reduce the waste we send to landfill by a minimum of 10 Tonnes during 2026.

Green Purchasing

It is our purchasing policy to identify and avail of all opportunities to acquire products and services that are energy efficient and eco-friendly.

All our purchases of new appliances are high energy efficient.
